What’s new about parking lots for trucks in Europe?
The European economy has slowed down significantly this year. The transport sector is among the sectors most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, unlike other areas of the economy, transport is recovering from the collapse very quickly. This is evidenced by new infrastructure investments.
Truck parking in Denmark
Since 1 July 2018, Denmark has had a 25-hour parking limit for heavy goods vehicles. This applies to all 90 sites on the Danish motorway network. This means that for almost 2 years, drivers have not been able to take a 45-hour rest on the country’s roads, which not only affects road safety but also has a negative impact on the local economy.
The regulation has been severely criticised by the national transport industry and the European Commission, which for the second time has called on Denmark to repeal it. In the communication of 14 May this year. The EC justified that the solution applied by the Danes limits the free provision of services guaranteed by the EU road transport regulations (Regulation No. 1072/2009).
Denmark has 4 months to respond to the European Commission’s call. If no reply is given, the case may be referred to the European Court of Justice. This may help to change the system and increase the number of safe parking places for lorries in Denmark.
Safety in lorry parking lots
The European Commission has long pointed out that lorry drivers are often faced with insufficient parking spaces. Brussels stresses that the level of security and protection of parking spaces is also too low to allow hauliers to carry out their cargo deliveries without disruption.
The EC has therefore decided to send a notice to Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Romania, Slovenia and the UK to provide information on safe parking.
This data concerns national parking areas – location, facilities, security level, services, flow of information about free parking spaces, etc. The requirement to make such information available demonstrates the progress of the development of parking infrastructure in the European Union.
New car parks for trucks in Europe
This is not the end of good news for professional drivers. The infrastructure investments announced by national authorities and pan-European investments are slowly producing new parking spaces and increased safety on international sites, for example in places as busy (and famous) as Calais.
The pearl of Calais
This is another news from the world of truck parking in Europe. The C4T car park in Calais has received the TAPA (Technology Asset Protections Association) safety certificate.
This means that the first car park with such a high standard of protection has appeared in a place where the conditions of parking have not been very safe for years. The facility is illuminated, fenced and monitored, and additionally guarded around the clock by security guards with dogs.
The parking space can be booked via the Bosch Secure Truck Parking platform. The cost per hour is 2.8 euros, per 10 hours 25.20 euros. A charge of 28 euros per day is payable, while a 48-hour stop is 50 euros. More information on the parking page.

Parking in the Port of Gdańsk
Meanwhile, the port of Gdansk announced the completion of works on the reconstruction of the road-rail system. According to the Maritime Board, 85% of the works have already been completed.
As part of the investment, 4 viaducts have been planned, 2 of which have already been included in the port’s road network, almost 6 kilometres of new roads and, most importantly, a buffer car park for lorries, which is currently being worked on at Portowa Street.
